Schiraldi had no more luck with the pinch hitter Kevin Mitchell, who laced another single to right. The young Boston reliever took a deep breath, bore down and got two quick strikes on the next batter, Ray Knight. With Boston poised to celebrate, Ray Knight kept the Red Sox victory on ice with a chip shot just behind second base that scored Gary Carter and sent Kevin Mitchell scurrying to third. Suddenly, there was nothing to celebrate.

With the Mets 90 feet away from a tie ball game, veteran right hander Bob Stanley was brought in to face Mookie Wilson. Stanley also brought his team within a strike of the championship. Mookie Wilson hung tough, barely fouling off two perfect pitches. Then, inexplicably, Stanley burned a fastball about a foot inside. Wilson jumped out of the way, the ball rolled to the backstop, Mitchell scored the tying run and She Stadium erupted in pandemonium.

With game 6 of the World Series now tied, there was still a game to be played, and Mookie Wilson had a 3-2 count on him.
